Myrtle Beach may be a long way from Mexico, but the Grand Strand knows how to throw a party to celebrate the favorite holiday of our friends south of the border. Featuring all-day bashes that include live music, fun and games, and even a 5K for the fitness-minded, Myrtle Beach's Mexican restaurant and bar community makes sure May 5 doesn't go unnoticed on the Grand Strand.

Guests at the Caribbean don’t have to travel far to find the fun. In addition to margaritas and frozen drinks flowing at the on-site Red Parrot Beachfront Grill on the pool deck, several nearby Mexican establishments will be putting on a shindig. Stroll a few blocks down to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and check out the oceanfront party at Bandito’s, or go a few blocks inland to the festivities at Broadway at the Beach. Better yet, take a cab or catch a shuttle to the biggest Cinco de Mayo party in town at Fiesta del Burro Loco, home of the 18th Annual Cinco de Mayo Burrofest.

In the spirit of ol’ Mexico, here are the top Cinco places to celebrate the holiday in Myrtle Beach:

Bandito's Cantina: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo on the oceanfront at this spacious Mexican and Caribbean-themed restaurant and bar. The party is held inside and out as live music plays the oceanfront stage throughout the day and drink specials flow at the bars. Bands scheduled to perform include the Austin Mowery Band, Matt Parker and the Deacons, and Mystic Vibrations.

BurroFest: Held at Fiesta del Burro Loco in Myrtle Beach, this 18th annual event is the headquarters for Cinco de Mayo on the Grand Strand. Located off 17 Bypass near Myrtle Waves, this Mexican cantina has fun year-round, but really knows how to throw a party on May 5. With a literal English translation of “Crazy Donkey Party,” that's a pretty accurate description of the scene at Fiesta del Burro Loco. The parking lot is transformed into an outdoor concert venue and beer and food vendors are set up inside and out. This year's musical lineup includes PaperWork, The Deluge, Tastes Like Chicken and headliner No Limit Duo and the stage is rocking from 4:30 p.m. till past midnight. Shuttles run to and from the event run every 30 minutes to provide a safe ride for partygoers.

Carlos 'N Charlie's: Lace up your sneakers and get ready to run at the Third Annual Cinco de Mayo 5K, which is held Sunday, May 3, at the Broadway at the Beach restaurant and bar. Kick off the holiday early by running the 3.1-mile course through the streets and shops of Broadway, and celebrate at the post-race party and awards ceremony. Prizes and a free Mexican buffet are among the many activities on tap for Sunday, and check back on Tuesday as Carlos 'N Charlie keep the party going for the actual holiday.

Nacho Hippo: Located in the Market Common district, this Mexican cantina goes all out for the holiday. Drink and food specials, games and other festivities are scheduled for this open-air restaurant and bar. This place knows how to have a good team every day, but takes it to the next level for Cinco de Mayo.

Senor Frogs: This international chain of Mexican and Caribbean-themed cantinas puts on an all-day party for patrons at Broadway at the Beach. Food and drink specials and an extra dose of good times are on tap at the Frog. The madness spills over to Celebrity Square for the late-night party at Broadway.
