Send Summer Off With an Unforgettable (and Affordable) Grand Strand Getaway

caribbean overview

With the days of summer beginning to pass us by, time is running short for pursuing the kind of sun-soaked summer fun that can only be found at the beach (and before school gets back in session). But the season hasn’t quite left us yet — there’s still time to squeeze in a last-minute Grand Strand getaway. And maybe even better: It’s not to late to snag a great vacation deal while doing so.

To send off your summer in Grand Strand style, consider these fun, outdoor-oriented activities that you and your vacation crew could enjoy with a late-season vacation in the Myrtle Beach area:

Get out in the gardens: Found about 20 miles south of Caribbean Resort & Villas, primarily outdoor attraction Brookgreen Gardens treats visitors to a 9,100-acre sculpture garden and wildlife preserve offering lush and expansive botanical gardens, each of them distinctly themed. As the home of the nation’s most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculpture, the grounds showcase more than 2,000 artworks by over 400 artists. Other outdoor attractions on the property include a butterfly garden, historic rice plantations, nature trails and the Lowcountry Zoo.

Take a hike: Located in Little River about 23 miles north of Caribbean Resort & Villas, Vereen Memorial Gardens features over 155 acres of forest and marshland that visitors can explore — with sections of the usually quiet and uncrowded property bordering the Intracoastal Waterway. Your vacation crew can enjoy the outdoors (and leave the crowds behind) by hiking the approximately 3 miles of boardwalks and nature trails that traverse the park’s botanical gardens and wildlife habitat. For more information, visit the Horry County parks website.

Wet a paddle: The Grand Strand is loaded with opportunities for aquatic recreation — from the deep and vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean to the East Coast-spanning Intracoastal Waterway to the area’s abundant rivers, lakes and marshes. And especially for those looking to find some peace and quiet on the area waters, kayaking is a great way to get outside and soak in nature’s symphony — as well as a great way to get in some paddle-powered exercise while enjoying the scenery.
To enjoy some of the Lowcountry’s best scenery and spot some wildlife while you’re at it, the Waccamaw River is a great place to float your boat. For a great guided option, check out the Waccamaw Lazy River Tour at Longs, SC-based Great Escapes Kayak Expeditions.

Take a stroll: Located about 15 miles inland from the Myrtle Beach oceanfront and Caribbean Resort & Villas, Conway is a historic and charming river town that’s a perfect destination for a day trip from the beach. It’s also extremely walkable, as most of its scenic downtown attractions are located just blocks apart from one another, making walking between them easy once you park your car. Downtown Conway’s top destinations for a scenic stroll include the Conway Riverwalk, which follows the banks of the Waccamaw River and passes alongside rustic wooden buildings, marinas, bridges and a playground along the way; as well as a collection of quaint downtown shops and restaurants.

Gain a new perspective — Sitting on the South Carolina coast about 30 minutes south of Caribbean Resort & Villas, Murrells Inlet is a historic fishing village that may be small, but boasts some big views and fantastic flavors. Both can be found in abundance at the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, where a collection of restaurants famous for serving up fresh-caught seafood line a half-mile wooden boardwalk overlooking a natural saltwater estuary. And for those looking to enjoy the late-day views from on the water, the Sunset Cruises offered by Express Watersports out of Murrells Inlet come complete with spectacular views, a cheese and fruit tray, and unlimited wine, beer and rum punch.
