Myrtle Beach Offers Fun Outdoor Activities in the Fall and Winter

Just because the fall and winter are considered the offseason in Myrtle Beach doesn’t mean that your favorite outdoor activities are out of season. In fact, many of the things that make the Grand Strand special reach their peak in the autumn, and even the winter offers plenty of warm days to venture into the great outdoors.

The Caribbean Resort & Villas puts you right in the heart of all the action regardless of the time of year. If you are one who prefers to participate instead of hibernate in the offseason, here’s a list of popular outdoor activities that await you this fall and winter in Myrtle Beach:

Brookgreen Gardens: Any time of year is a good time to visit this Murrells Inlet attraction, but the milder temperatures and fall foliage of this former rice plantation turned botanical sculpture garden provides the perfect backdrop for this scenic spot. Stroll the gardens, visit the Lowcountry Zoo and take a boat tour of the surrounding rivers. If you are in town in mid-December, Brookgreen's Night of a Thousand Candles exhibit is one of the top Christmas displays in the Southeast.

Cycling/Hiking: Right across Highway 17 from Brookgreen Gardens is Huntington Beach State Park, which features some of the nicest hiking and biking trails on the Grand Strand. Hike through the woodland and wetlands of a maritime forest, or take the paved bike trail all the way to Litchfield Beach. For a wilder bike ride, the Hulk (Horry County Bike and Hike Trails) are located off 10th Avenue North Extension. Closer to the Caribbean Resort, sidewalks and bike lanes have been extended the entire length of Ocean Boulevard.

Festivals: Autumn is the height of the social season on the Grand Strand with several outdoor festivals on the calendar. The Downtown Myrtle Beach's Oktoberfest is set for Oct. 10-11, with live music and German-themed food and beer. Oct. 23 marks the start of the Pawleys Island Arts & Crafts Festival, which attracts top vendors to the Hammocks Shops. During the holiday season, check out several Christmas parades, including those on foot and by boat, and tree-lighting ceremonies throughout the Grand Strand.

Fishing: The fall is prime time for fishing, both by boat and from dry land. Deep-sea fishing charters take anglers where the autumn runs are so you can hook a big one, while the pier fishing and surf fishing are also at their peak. Of course, fishing drops off considerably in the winter when even the fish take a bit of a break, but you know the old saying: “A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work.”

Golf: The fall golf season is in full swing as golfers and snowbirds flock to Grand Strand courses for the offseason. The autumn weather is ideal for golf and courses offer great rates and packages for those who want to chase the little white ball. The winter is a bit trickier as there are some days that are way too cold for golf, but the price is right for those who choose to play on warmer weather days.

Running: The Grand Strand has become a hot spot for road races, and runners prefer the cooler temperatures of the offseason. The Oct. 18 Myrtle Beach Mini-Marathon kicks off the fall racing season, followed by a flurry of holiday-themed events, including turkey trots and reindeer runs. The winter racing season closes with the biggest event of the year, the Myrtle Beach Marathon, in February.

No matter what outdoor activities you choose to participate in on the Grand Strand, be sure to spend your indoor time at the Caribbean Resort & Villas.
