The Grand Strand is lined with shopping malls, retail centers and outlet stores, not to mention mega-plexes like Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing. But there’s nowhere else in the Myrtle Beach area for shopping like Market Common. In fact, this urban-style village looks closer to something you might expect to find in Malibu instead of Myrtle Beach. Built on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, this big-city environment is surrounded by lots of green space. The adjoining Valor Park features exercise trails, sports fields and playground equipment – perfect for taking a break from shopping with a picnic lunch while the little ones burn off some energy. Or enjoy a nice lunch or fine-dining experience at one of the many restaurants while the non-shoppers head to the theater to kill some time and catch a flick. But shopping is the main event at Market Common, and there are more than you can shake a credit card at. Apparel, accessories, jewelry, artwork and more are on display along the city streets and sidewalks, including national chain stores, regional gift boutiques and local mom-and-pop shops. Their Alabama Theatre show will be the second stop on their US Tour, and just their second show since the CMA announced their induction in March. But the 190-foot, high-tech Ferris wheel really shines after the sun goes down and the flashing neon colors light up the downtown skyline. But as pretty as the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is at ground level, it’s nothing like the view from the top of the largest observation attraction on the East Coast. Unlike the scenic but one-sided sightline from your private oceanfront balcony at the Caribbean, the SkyWheel offers a 360-degree, panoramic view of land and sea. But since the time machine hasn’t been invented yet, the next best thing is only a short drive away at Pirates Voyage Dinner Attraction. Located near Restaurant Row on the north end of Myrtle Beach, this dinner theater offers action-packed excitement and a delicious four-course feast for the whole family. Longtime visitors may remember this palatial building as the old “Dixie Stampede,” but the theater received a major overhaul and a new identity in 2011. Owner Dolly Parton brought in a fresh new show that appealed to a broader family audience, and Pirate Voyage has received rave reviews with a capital “Aaarrrghh!”
