Great food rules the menus at Dunes Village Resort
The truth is many of us view hotel food like we do hospital food: We consume it simply because it is right in front of us. At best, many of us view hotel food as mediocre compared to the food served at our favorite restaurants.
And if you fit somewhere in the aforementioned description, Jennifer Moen has a message for you – don’t sleep on the food you find at a hotel, especially when the place in question is Dunes Village Resort in Myrtle Beach.
“We are not the norm,” said Moen, executive chef of Captains Café, a full-service restaurant and bar at Dunes Village.
Here, at this oceanfront locale, you won’t find Moen and her staff taking shortcuts. The steaks are cut by hand. The seafood is fresh, never frozen. The bottom line is the food at Captain’s Café is prepared with care.
“We have people from Maryland who stay here and tell us our crab cakes are the best they ever had,” said Moen said, who gives out samples upon request and was trained at Johnson & Wales University. “We have guests come over from [other hotels] to eat with us. Our food is the freshest, best food you will see come out of a hotel.”
You can get a seafood platter with a 7-ounce piece of flounder, eight oysters, eight large shrimp and three hushpuppies for $26.95, which you can split for no additional charge. She-crab soup, sandwiches and other items are also on the menu.
In addition to exceptional seafood, Moen and her staff also prepare Angus steaks and burgers. Basically, the fine food and everyday, beloved fare you can have outside of a hotel is inside of Dunes Village.
And just like chefs in other eateries, hotel chefs come from a family of cooks, too. Moen’s mom is a chef. Her uncle is a pastry chef. Her great grandmother was a chef during World War I. Her grandmother was a chef during World War II.
“My mother knows how to cook food, but she can’t bake,” Moen said. “My uncle can bake, but he can’t cook. I can do both.”
In addition to having talented chefs on board, resorts also have the advantage, like malls, of having several eateries, instead of one.
The Admiral’s Room Restaurant is here, too.
“The Admiral’s Room is our restaurant for a hot breakfast buffet,” said Jordan Starnes, front office manager at Dunes Village. “We have a waffle station, where you can make your own waffles. There is also eggs, grits, bacon and other food you’d expect to see on a full breakfast buffet.”
The buffet costs $9.95 for adults and $5.95 for children 12 and under.
“We don’t have skinny waffles,” Moen said. “Our waffles are two inches thick. We also have omelets, and you can also order pancakes.”
Guests are impressed by the breakfast offerings and service at the Admiral’s Room.
“Just had breakfast,” said Danny Chapman via the resort’s Facebook page. “Our waiter, Sean, sure made us feel like we were on vacation!! Awesome Time!!”
If that were not enough, Dunes Village also has a Seattle’s Best Coffee Shop within its walls.
But again, that’s not all. Dunes Village also has a bar called the Cabana Tiki Bar.
So, as you can see, this resort allows you to experience the culinary offerings of Myrtle Beach without ever cranking up your vehicle or walking miles.
