2nd Avenue Pier is Great To Fish, Grab A Bite or Get A Drink

2nd Ave. Pier Is Home To Food, Fishing and Nature’s Beauty

As waves greeted bare feet along the edges of the Atlantic Ocean, throngs above on 2nd Ave. Pier cast down fishing lines in hopes the sea would relinquish bounty.

It did give up some goodies – fishing folks caught flounder, croaker, Spanish mackerel and other inhabitants of the deep waters.
Down on the opposite end of the 903-foot pier, people gathered in the sunlit warmth of Pier House Restaurant and enjoyed omelets, silky grits, nutty toast and good conversation.

When night came, people also congregated at Pier View, an open-air, on top of the restaurant.
All of these worlds – the fishing pier, the eatery and the open-air bar – are part of the 2nd Avenue Pier experience, where people find pleasure in nature and satisfaction in good food and fun in the heart of Myrtle Beach.
Teak Collins said his family has been operating the 2nd Avenue Pier in Myrtle Beach since the mid-1960s, when the Grand Strand was yet architecturally naked.

Collins said he and his family are natives of Myrtle Beach with deep-rooted love for the city.
“I grew up here,” Collins said. “Myrtle Beach was heaven to us, and we weren’t going anywhere else.”
Stop by 2nd Ave. Pier and you will immediately assess why the Collins family is smitten with this part of their existence.
For starters, the view is spectacular.

“The view is a big thing we take pride in here,” Collins said. “We run every part of the business on a non-upscale level. We are very hands-on.”
These are skilled hands, mind you.

In the restaurant, courteous and quick servers bring you authentic flavors of the South prepared by seasoned cooks.
Wendy Edwards, of Savannah, Ga., was thoroughly impressed with the shrimp and grits she had for breakfast. She said the dish is better than the one served up at Paula Deen’s The Lady & Sons Restaurant in Savannah.
“It was fabulous,” Edwards said. “It’s the best shrimp and grits I have ever had. It’s just a shame I couldn’t eat it all because they gave me so much.”

Georgina Meeks, of Newcomerstown, Ohio, said everything she had – the toast, her eggs and coffee – were wonderful.
“It was a great breakfast, and the view is gorgeous,” Meeks said.
Pier House Restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, with the Georgetown Grouper Reuben (lunch) and Crab cakes (dinner) being among the options.

Upstairs, at Pier View, there is hearty and funky finger food, including Plantation Pimento Cheese Chip, Waccamaw Wings and Second Avenue Sliders.
In addition to the yummy bar food, there are also plenty of drinks to sip, including the Miami Vice (a pina colada and strawberry daiquiri).

The men and women who love the sea, however, tend to stay on 2nd Ave. Pier.
A fishing pass is only $9 per day, while a walking pass allows you to enjoy the sun, view and nature (porpoises, sharks, pelicans and other ocean life and sky dwellers) for $1.

Dalton Killen, of Nickelsville, Va., decided to spend the bulk of his day with a fishing rod in his hands.
“I like it,” Killen said. “I really like the pier. It’s nice out here. It’s pretty.”
